The handball player (Soraya García, gold medal winner in Almeria 2005) is throwing a ball into the Mediterranean Sea, which is symbolized by the water of the fountain.
The digits of 2005, which "are floating on the water of the Mediterranean", are designed symmetrically, so that you can read 2005 from the front and from the back. The zeros are interlaced like olympic rings.
